What TextTally Does

TextTally is a free set of text-counting tools: word counters, character counters, sentence counters, and paragraph counters, including tools built specifically for the challenges of counting Chinese text. Paste text into any tool on the site and get an instant, accurate count — no account, no file upload, no waiting.

Why It Exists

Counting text sounds like a solved problem until you actually need to do it for Chinese, where there are no spaces between words and “word count” genuinely requires a judgment call rather than a simple calculation. TextTally started as a focused answer to that problem, and has grown into a wider toolkit covering the general writing-length questions people run into — essay limits, social post lengths, and translated-text comparisons.

Our Privacy-First Design Philosophy

Every tool on this site runs entirely in your browser. We built it this way deliberately: there’s no legitimate reason a word counter needs to see, store, or transmit what you’re writing, so it doesn’t. You can read the full details on our Privacy Policy page.

How We Approach Accuracy

Where a number is exact — like a Chinese character count — we present it as exact. Where a number is necessarily an estimate — like a Chinese word count, built without spaces to guide it — we say so directly in the tool itself, rather than presenting an estimate as a precise figure. We’d rather be useful and honest about our limitations than falsely authoritative.

How Content Is Maintained

Guides on this site are reviewed and updated when the information they cover changes — for example, if a tool we reference (like Google Slides) adds a feature we’ve described as missing. Each guide shows its last-updated date so you can judge its currency for yourself.
